Background:

Something New was partially right concerning this "new" Beatles album. This album did have some new material coming from England in the form of leftover songs from the non-soundtrack side to the British A Hard Day's Night album, plus songs released in England as the Long Tall Sally EP, with the German version of I Want To Hold Your Hand thrown in for good measure. However, in case no one had noticed, Capitol also put on the album some songs from the Hard Day's Night film soundtrack released by United Artists almost a month earlier.

As part of the agreement with EMI and United Artists, Capitol records had the right to release no less than five of the official eight songs on this album so long as they didn't call their album A Hard Day's Night. Now, Capitol released two singles immediately after releasing the single A Hard Day's Night (the two singles were I'll Cry Instead b/w I'm Happy Just To Dance With You, and And I Love Her b/w If I Fell). Can't Buy Me Love was released as a single in March, 1964 and Capitol at the time had just released the single A Hard Day's Night. In one form or another Capitol had on the store shelves all the songs from the Hard Day's Night soundtrack alongside the United Artists album. Not a bad deal!!

Despite the saturation of these eight songs from both United Artists and Capitol, Something New was another smash hit for the Beatles stalling it at #2 on Billboard, Record World, and Cashbox charts, all the while being held from the top spot by the A Hard Day's Night soundtrack. Talk about irony!!!
