Background

Two years after Capitol records released The Beatles: Rarities, they decided to rehash material from the Beatles five movies and repackage it into an album of movie music, thus the title Reel Music. The cover was widely criticized by music reviewers for it's artwork of the Beatles in various incarnations of movie roles. One look at the cover, and it's difficult to tell just which Beatle is which. Included in Reel Music was a special booklet of "rare" photos, which actually were photos previously published in other magazines. In fact, Capitol reprinted the Magical Mystery Tour photos which at one time were part of the Magical Mystery Tour's album fold out booklet (The fold out book was discontinued for the album in 1980).

Interesting note here is that Capitol Records released a single from the album. The single contained spliced excerpts from the Reel Music album, creating a movie medley if you will. The single The Beatles Movie Medley b/w I'm Happy Just To Dance With You missed the Top Ten on Billboard (#12) and Cash Box (#14). Despite this half-hearted effort by Capitol, The album cracked the Top Twenty on the Billboard and Cash Box record charts largely because of Capitol's extensive promotional campaign.
