Background

In January 1970, Apple records sent out, then almost immediately recalled promotional copies of the Beatles new album titled Get Back (later changed to Let It Be). Because of this, the decision was made to issue this album to fill-in orders already taken for the Get Back album.

At first, this fill-in album was going to be titled The Beatles Again, and featured the back cover of the eventual Hey Jude album as it's front cover, with the front cover of the Hey Jude album being it's back cover. When it was decided to release the album as titled Hey Jude, the pictures from The Beatles Again were reversed for the album.

Hey Jude features songs not found on any Capitol Records Beatles album. Some of the tracks were as old as six years old, and some of the tracks having been released a few months prior to this album.

This fill-in Beatles album did very well on the American charts considering the age of some of the tracks and also considering the album Abbey Road was still riding high on the charts. Hey Jude would eventually become one of the Beatles all-time biggest sellers.
