Background

In England, record buyers had three types of formats to choose from when buying records: An album, a single, and an extended play (or EP as they are called). EP's were records about the size of a 45 rpm single, except an EP contains four songs instead of two. Two songs would be on one side of the EP, with the other two songs on the B-side.

With the EP format successful in England, Vee Jay records decided to test American record buyers with an EP release. Four songs from the album Introducing The Beatles were used for this EP. However, the EP format failed to catch on in America.

Of note here, is that this Beatles EP was being offered at one time as a promotion thru a potato chip company (Buy the chips, send in the wrappers, get the record). Otherwise, this Beatles EP failed to chart on any of the three record charts. It would be a couple of months before Capitol Records would give the EP format a try.
