Background
The Beatles next single came from the
already released Abbey Road album.
George Harrison's Something and John
Lennon's Come Together would be the
first and only Beatles single to have
both A and B sides reach number one.
Billboard and Cashbox had designated
Something as the A side with Come Together as the
B side. Cashbox had Come Together reach
number one, while Something followed at
number two. Billboard meanwhile raised
Come Together to number two and
Something to number three, then combined
the two sides, and thus went with the
belief that a record should be charted
as a single entry, regardless of whether
it was a lone or double-sided hit.
Therefore, Billboard and Cashbox
awarded Something/Come Together the
number one spot.
