Background

During the summer of 1978, a movie titled Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band starring Peter Frampton and The Bee Gees was released in theaters. The movie was based on Sgt. Pepper and the Lonely Hearts Club Band, and also contained characters from Beatles songs (i.e.= Mean Mr. Mustard, Strawberry Fields, Mr. Kite, etc.).

In order to compete with this soundtrack (and the Sgt. Pepper single being released from the movie's soundtrack album), Capitol records released the original Sgt. Pepper song alongside With A Little Help From My Friends to make up the A-side, and A Day In The Life making up the B-side. In addition, Capitol records remixed and reissued the Sgt. Pepper album, including a picture disc version. The remixed Sgt. Pepper album did pretty well in garnering new sales from people who hadn't heard the album before. As for this single, it didn't reach top forty status on any of the three charts, primairly because people were buying the whole Sgt. Pepper album instead of just the single.
