You Can't Do That

Background

Can't Buy Me Love was the next "official" single from Capitol Records. By this time, however, over half a dozen Beatles singles had already flooded the voracious Beatles market in the U.S. This didn't keep Can't Buy Me Love from setting a record for most advance sales of a U.S. single with 2,100,000 advance orders placed.

On April 4, 1964, Can't Buy Me Love joined four other Beatles singles on the Billboard Hot 100 to make up the top five singles in the country. (The rankings were as follows: (1) Can't Buy Me Love, (2) Twist And Shout, (3) She Loves You, (4) I Want To Hold Your Hand, and (5) Please Please Me). In addition, the single would also become a number one hit both in America and in England at the same time, another first. Billboard was the only record chart to separately chart the B-side You Can't Do That, placing it at #48.
