Background

Past Masters Volume 2 is the companion to the Past Masters Volume 1 CD that was also issued the same day as Volume 1. Again, these songs are from singles not released on any previous U.K Beatles albums. Some of these songs were however released in the U.S as singles and album tracks. Here again is a brief summary of the songs in Volume 2:


  1. Day Tripper: The B side to the We Can Work It Out single in both the U.K and U.S. Appears on the album A Collection of Beatles Oldies [Parlophone PMC 7016 (mono),PCS 7016 (stereo); released Dec.9, 1966]. Also appears as an album track on the American album Yesterday...And Today (Capitol ST-2553; released June 15, 1966).

  2. We Can Work It Out: Beatles single b/w Day Tripper. Released in England on December 3, 1965 (Parlophone R 5389). In the U.K., song appears on A Collection of Beatles Oldies. In the U.S., single released December 6, 1965 (Capitol 5555). The song appears on the American album Yesterday...And Today.

  3. Paperback Writer: Beatles single b/w Rain. Released in the U.K June 10, 1966 (Parlophone R 5452). Also appears on album A Collection of Beatles Oldies. In the U.S., single released May 23, 1966 (Capitol 5651). Also appears on the American album Hey Jude (Apple SW-385/SO-385; released Feb. 23, 1970).

  4. Rain: The B side to the Paperback Writer single in both the U.K. and U.S. Not issued on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S. the song appears on the American album Hey Jude.

  5. Lady Madonna: Beatles single b/w The Inner Light released in England March 15, 1968 (Parlophone R5675). In the U.S., single released March 18, 1968 (Capitol 2138). Song doesn't appear on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S., the song appears on the American album Hey Jude.

  6. The Inner Light: The B side to the Lady Madonna single in both the U.S. and the U.K. Not released on any Beatles album in the U.S or the U.K.

  7. Hey Jude: Beatles single b/w Revolution released in the U.K August 30, 1968 (Apple/Parlophone R5722). Not released on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S.,released August 26, 1969 (Apple 2276). Also appears on the American album Hey Jude

  8. Revolution: The B side to the Hey Jude single in both the U.S and the U.K. This is the sped up reworked version of the song from The Beatles (White Album). This single version was not included on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S the song appears on the American album Hey Jude.

  9. Get Back: Beatles single b/w Don't Let Me Down. Released in the U.K April 11, 1969 (Apple/Parlophone R5777). U.S.single released May 5, 1969 (Apple 2490). Single version different than album version with extra verse on single version.

  10. Don't Let Me Down: The B side to the Get Back single in both the U.S. and U.K. Song not included on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S. song appears on the American album Hey Jude.

  11. The Ballad Of John and Yoko: Beatles single b/w Old Brown Shoe. Released in the U.K May 30, 1969 (Apple/Parlophone R5786). U.S. single released June 16, l969 (Apple 2531). Song not included on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S., song appears on the American album Hey Jude.

  12. Old Brown Shoe: The B side to The Ballad Of John and Yoko single in both the U.K and U.S. Not included on any U.K Beatles album. In the U.S. song appears on the American album Hey Jude.

  13. Across The Universe: Alternate version of album track from the Let It Be album. This version includes bird sound effects and female backup singers instead of orchestration. This version was not released in the U.K or U.S on any albums or singles. This version was instead used on the World Wildlife Fund charity album No One's Gonna Change Our World (Released December 1969).

  14. Let It Be: Beatles single b/w You Know My Name (Look Up The Number). Released in the U.K March 6, 1970 (Apple/Parlophone R5833). Single released in the U.S March 16, 1970 (Apple 2764). Single version slightly different than album version. Guitar solo on single version not as upfront as on album version, and running time slightly less than album version.

  15. You Know My Name (Look Up The Number): The B side to the Let It Be single in both the U.K and the U.S. Not released on any U.S or U.K Beatles album.
