Background

March, 1988 saw EMI release two Beatles albums designed to fill in the gap of Beatles songs that hadn't been released on any of the original Beatles albums. Past Masters Vol.1 ( and it's companion Past Masters Vol. 2) culminates Beatles songs that were released as singles or EP's in England. For the U.S. many of these songs were released as singles or album tracks on the American Beatles albums. Here then is a brief summary of the songs on Past Masters Vol.1:


  1. Love Me Do: Released as a single b/w P.S. I Love You on Oct.5,1962 in England (Parlophone 45-R4949) and is also on the Please Please Me album. Song released in the U.S on April 27,1964 (Tollie 9008). Appears on American album The Early Beatles (Capitol ST-2309), and also appears on U.S. album Introducing The Beatles (Vee Jay 1062). Version presented here is the one with Ringo playing drums. Version with drummer Andy White is released in America.

  2. From Me To You: Released as an A side b/w Thank You Girl on April 11, 1962 in England (Parlophone R5015), and also appears on the U.K album A Collection of Beatles Oldies [Parlophone PMC-7016 (mono), PCS-7016 (stereo); Released Dec. 9, 1966]. Released twice in the U.S on May 27, 1963 (Vee Jay 522 with Thank You Girl as the B side) and Jan. 30, 1964 (Vee Jay 581, as the B side with Please Please Me as the A side).

  3. Thank You Girl: B side of the From Me To You single in England and a single in the U.S. Released twice in the U.S, first time as the B side to the From Me To You single, and later as the B side to the single Do You Want To Know A Secret? (Vee Jay 587; Released March 23, 1964). Also appears on the American album The Beatles Second Album (Capitol ST-2080).

  4. She Loves You: Released as a single in England August 23, 1963 b/w I'll Get You, and also appears on the U.K album A Collection of Beatles Oldies. Released in the U.S. as a single Sept.16, 1963 b/w I'll Get You (Swan 4152). Appears on American album The Beatles Second Album.

  5. I'll Get You: The B side to the She Loves You singles in both the U.K and the U.S. Also appears on the American album The Beatles Second Album, and the B side to the German sung Sie Liebt Dich (She Loves You) single in the U.S.

  6. I Want To Hold Your Hand: Released in England b/w This Boy on Nov. 29, 1963 (Parlophone R5084) and also appears on the album A Collection of Beatles Oldies. Released as a single in the U.S b/w I Saw Her Standing There (Capitol 5112) on Dec.26, 1963. Also appears on the American album Meet The Beatles! (Capitol ST-2047).

  7. This Boy: The B side to the I Want To Hold Your Hand single in England. In the U.S. the song appears on the album Meet The Beatles!

  8. Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand: I Want To Hold Your Hand, sung in German. Not released in the U.K as either a single or album track. In the U.S. the song appears on the American album Something New (Capitol ST-2108).

  9. Sie Liebt Dich: She Loves You, sung in German. Recorded on the same day as Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand. Again, not released in England as a single or album track. In the U.S. the song was released as an A side b/w I'll Get You on May 21, 1964 (Swan 4182).

  10. Long Tall Sally: Title track of Beatles EP (extended play) released June 19, 1964 (Parlophone GEP 8913). In the U.S. the song appears on the American album The Beatles Second Album.

  11. I Call Your Name: Track from the Long Tall Sally EP in England. In the U.S., the song appears on the American album The Beatles Second Album.

  12. Slow Down: Track from the Long Tall Sally EP in England. In the U.S. the song appears as a B side to the single Matchbox (Capitol 5255 released August 24, 1964), and as an album track from the album Something New.

  13. Matchbox: Track from the Long Tall Sally EP in England. In the U.S., the song is released as a single b/w Slow Down and appears as an album track on the American album Something New.

  14. I Feel Fine: Released as a single b/w She's a Woman on Nov. 27,1964 (Parlophone R5200) and also appears on the album A Collection of Beatles Oldies. In the U.S., released as a single with the same B side on Nov.23, 1964 (Capitol 5327), and also appears on the American album Beatles '65 (Capitol ST-2228).

  15. She's A Woman: The B side to the I Feel Fine single in both the U.K and the U.S. In the U.S. the song appears on the American album Beatles '65.

  16. Bad Boy: Song not released in England as a single or album track. Song does appear on U.K album A Collection of Beatles Oldies. In the U.S., the song appears on the American album Beatles VI (Capitol ST-2358).

  17. Yes It Is: The B side of the Ticket to Ride singles in both the U.K and the U.S. U.K single released April 9, 1965 (Parlophone R5265) and in the U.S released April 19, 1965 (Capitol 5407). Song doesn't appear on any album in the U.K, but in America appears on the American album Beatles VI

  18. I'm Down: The B side to the Help! singles in both the U.K and the U.S. U.K single released July 23, 1965 (Parlophone R5305) and in the U.S. on July 19, 1965 (Capitol 5476). The song would not be included on any U.K or U.S Beatles album until the 1976 compilation album Rock 'N' Roll Music.
